The Chronicle of the Stargazers

The Song in head syndrome – This, the term I was looking for popped up in an IELTS test. Currently, “Secret base” kept playing in my head. I wouldn’t be surprised, as this time – I’m on the verge of leaving something that I’ve cherished, something that has been my reason to go to college, or even, to wake up every morning, something that took up every minute of my free time and something I would gladly die for – The Stargazer Society of Methodist College Kuala Lumpur.

Establishment

In actual fact, the club was conceived somewhere in late November 2010. At a time when I was searching for my true self. The 6 founding members – Lai Cheong, Edward, Stephanie, Nixon , Charmain and me. God knows where some of them have gone now. It was, above all, the tenacity of the desire to set up this club, coupled with the invaluable leniency of Mr Michael, that the Stargazer Society was able to open its doors on 10 Feb 2010.

One thing that really inspired me for the setting up of this club is the 2010 Geminids Meteor Shower, which we observed in Kajang along with Simpson, De Yun and Li Huan. As the night gradually falls in, the familiar patterns of stars which I once was so crazy about it long ago, they were calling out to me – I felt so at home under the sky. This feeling, I still have it every time I find myself in a sky full of stars. And thanks to the superb meteor shower, it rejuvenated my determination to start up the club in the holidays, and I never regretted every second of it since.

Reinventing astronomy

The 2nd meeting was a big mistake. A hastily compiled data set of theoretical physics for 1.5 hours proved much more effective than Ms Lim’s afternoon Maths class. Seeing member after member trying to stay awake, I made a resolution to change the way astronomy is preached to the members, and also to everyone :P Ironically what I remembered most is that Adrian was the only one who seems to be so interested about everything, even giving a ‘wtf’ look when I put it the turtle towers analogy.

Anyway, I squeezed my brain juices for the next meet. Luck was in the form of a star party, which was the informally Stargazer Society’s first Star Party in Kajang with Tan Simpson’s new SpaceProbe 130 ShortTube Equatorial. I was introduced to Stellarium, later proved to be a very effective tool in extracting the oohs and aahs from the newbie Stargazers :D The outing reminded me of how pleasing stargazing is, and thus….

‘Ok now, everyone please lie down on the table!” was something I suppose not every normal club president would ask the people to do! But that was exactly what happened that day, where we were to learn about the celestial sphere, the zenith, meridian, RA and DEC, the hand angles and everything pure astronomy goodness. Yeang Ching brought along a new member, who was later instrumental in radically changing the Stargazer Society – Secretary Choong Joy Teen.

Stargazer’s Outpost – Kajang

CIMG8475CIMG8482

Since the start of this club, old school friend Tan Simpson has been of immeasureable help to the club. In fact, out very first informal and formal outings are both held at the park near his house at Taman Prima Saujana, Kajang.

Stargazer Society Star Party 1 and 2 saw the wonders of the Winter and Summer skies. Mr Lopez helped made the second star party official by driving 2+ hours all the way to Kajang! With the help of many people and Lady Luck, both star parties are considered succesful and proved instrumental for our following outing.

Spreading the message

One event that the Stargazer Society still take pride in organizing – the President always talk about it even today – the UNMC Nature Club – MCKL Stargazer Society Lyrids Watch! It was definitely a very different outing from all of the rest.

At the suggestion of Josh, the Stargazers contemplated about having a star party in the serene outskirts of KL, in Semenyih at the UNMC campus. After much doubts, with reassurance from the good fellows over at Nature Club, we decided to make the event a blast!

Well, it was not really a blast. The plans all went haywire, the beautiful amphitheatre was full of people lying down like refugees and we decided to let them be – while the Stargazers walk around and guide them to the sky :) A great help from Ms Teoh Hui Chieh and Aisah Yap, fellow enthusiasts that brought a refractor and a Cassegrain to view the Winter sky. Unfortunately it was like really cloudly for most of the night, but when the sky is clear the Stargazers showed them the famous constellations and implant some astronomy virus in them, according to the princicples of the Stargazer Society.

They are out there….

Towards the end of the first semester, the Stargazers realised that more can be done – we will be having a long, long time to play in the 2nd part of the year! Therefore, I along with comrade Simpson went on to get contacts and network with the astronomy community in Malaysia.

On the night of the Chem 4 exam, a once in how-many-years Lunar Eclipse was taking place and the National Space Agency was hosting an observation party over at the National Mosque. Joy, Yi Kun and I represented the Stargazer Society. Apart from watching half of the eclipse, the Stargazers got to know Ms Chen Chen Lau of the Planetarium, Ms Sufen of Orion telescopes, among many others. It was an outing that was memorable in many ways, although we didn’t get to see the eclipse in full. Sharing astronomy with the people at the mosque was also fulfilling, and telescopes the size of garbage bins by the Planetarium makes the Stargazers drool. Hehe.

Next up is none other than the Penang Astronomy Convention in Penang. It was a trip like none other – Simpson and I rode a 4 hour trip over there and it’s our first time backpacking. In USM we met the legendary Dr Chong and USM Astronomy Club, and had a helluva time in USM and Penang.

CIMG8838

CIMG8906

The astronomy spirit in Penang is amazing! Quite a number of secondary schools actually set up booths in the convention, not to mention small kids manning the water rockets we launched in the something fair in Kepala Batas. No need for 1Malaysia or any other shit, astronomy was good enough to keep us together! Over at the fair I’ve also met a friend from long ago – the Perseid Telescopes company that came to the motivation camp in SJKC Chee Mong back in 2003. I bought the Star Charts and lost it, and now I have it again! The Star Charts reminded me of my days in Kerteh looking at Scorpio, and longing for a telescope in KL when I was 12 back then.

CIMG8988CIMG9006

And this is the aweshume largest refractor in Malaysia…! OK this is turning into an ‘Astronomy and me’ blog post. Ahem well the trip inspired me to, above all, further spread the sidewalk spirit and launch water rockets! I also made a note to myself to bring the Stargazer crew over to Penang someday.

Bigger, and louder!

CIMG9097CIMG9098

Not to say discriminating, but Julies are awesome! Haha that’s what I thought. The new semester saw the joining of a very enthusiastic crew that attended our first (partially failed) sidewalk effort in KLCC moved to Titiwangsa Park. However, the smiles are worth the effort, especially when they see Saturn or the Moon through Simpson’s scope at that time! We didn’t manage to get any long term ‘converts’ that time, but well I hope that we made an impression!

Note : If we want to really make the news – as Chee Meng requested as our goals – I think we can start with a monthly sidewalk over at Titiwangsa! I’m sure many will be interested!

CIMG9120

DSC_0409

The Perseids Meteor Shower saw a participation of 18 people (or so I remember), a damn large delegation that saw unfortunate consequences – long walking under the hot sun, squeezing the KTM, KTM delay, walking to KTM Station. Well, it’s a budget trip, we’re a budget society. However, most participants, if not all, managed to get glimpse of some beautiful meteors (I scored 5), and who does not enjoy to have a refractor and reflector at once! ^.^

Festival society

Back in college, I think we somehow must’ve be known as the festival society. All thanks to the hard work, sweat and breaking bones by the Stargazers, with special special special credits due to Joy our beloved master planner!

First off is the Stargazer’s Summer Festival a.k.a fundraiser! In the pretext of more exciting activities, we sold food and stuff throughout the week (devastatingly tiring), mashed potatoes, our FAMOUS nachos with some cheese or chilli con carne with credits to Cross, Joy’s mushroom soup and Cross’s caricatures! The Stargazers worked hard, played hard, stole food, pulled overnighters, further enhancing the bonds between friends and meanwhile promoting the society! After the fund raiser, we took a break, not knowing something bigger is looming ahead….

DSC_0038DSC_0076

DSC_0074

And that was a festival like no other – A Japanese themed, astronomy aimed, Party Rock atmosphere-d, Chinese Moon Cake Festival! We were in luck for the Recreation Room was ours to have for the whole week, out of luck where we have scarcely enough time to promote the festival, and it rained when we planned to set up in the basketball court. Truthfully, the scene when everyone in college, Stargazers or not, all came down and helped us set up the stalls and lights when we were running out of time – it almost moved me to tears. Really. That was when I was so glad that the Stargazer Society was in MCKL.

Of course, Stargazers were awesome too, relentlessly serving the participants to make the event a memorable affair. Special credit goes to the one who hasn’t had a good sleep for days, worked until her neck went stiff, and planned all the details when the president was stymied by the realisation of how complex the required plannings were. No amount of gratefulness can describe how much the Stargazers owe you.

And the cycle goes on…

One doesn’t have to listen to Guns and Roses’ November Rain to know how depressing the end of the year is. All good things come to an end, and here are we, passing on the baton to the committee of 2012, Adrian, Daisuke, Apple, Hui Jia, Yaw Jin and Arvin. As much as I didn’t want to let go, I believe that you all can and will do a better job for the club. It was my life – and I hope that it can be part of yours too. After the Water Rocket and Bukit Tinggi final outing, the club is in your full power :) but do remember to call me whenever you’re going on outings or having an interesting experiment. Hopefully I will be there, or else I will be waiting for your updates on the blog!

Election for Next semester's committees.

Hi guys, it's me again!

2 weeks ago we had our little committee meeting about constitution of our society and the upcoming trips. Nothing much I can share here...About the Bukit Tinggi trip i think i will make another post about it so be patient ya =D

Yesterday was our society's election for next year's committee members! ( ゚∀゚ノノ゙
Almost all members came (some still went missing I don't know why?)

Before we start the election Mr. President gave us a short brief about our society (゚∀゚)

errr, the last one was added by Chee Meng, though. XD

Then of course the general requirements to be a committee... 66 outings? XD (should be 66%)
The most important one was "ACTIVE ON FACEBOOK" lol (it's the only one written in CAPITAL LETTERS.)

Here are the list of committees we need:
Vice Secretary was added as the job of the Secretary was just too heavy.

After the briefing Joy gave us a short talk about the responsibilities of the c
シ―─―(;^ω^)―─―ン

3 minutes break before the election started.... The atmosphere returned normal after this. *laugh*

So the very first post to be elected was, of course, the PRESIDENT.

Kee Onn said: Nominate someone that you think he /she can replace me. LOL That's just too hard. Seriously.
That why everyone kept silent until Kee Onn nominated Adrian. \(^o^)/
After Kee Onn started it everyone got excited and suddenly I heard somebody said "daisuke"... (´・(´・(´・(´・(´・д・`) ・`)・`)・`)・`)ヤダ ←This is exactly what i felt.
WHO'S THAT!? NOOOOOOOOOO-------------------!

Luckily there was a very very nice chance for me to surrender...yeah, we need to give a short speech. AWwww. I got myself a chance to surrender in front of everyone. LOL
Eventually both of us got halau from the class ==" until the result was out.

Congrats to Adrian! Our future president!!!! Right after he has been elected the election was no longer held by Kee Onn but Adrian. (o`・ω・)o

Next was Vice President.

I heard my name once again (I guess you guys LOVE my name isn't it? I know daisuke sounds nice(*´艸`)) and this time Victor and Yaw Jin were also nominated.
Errr, well I didnt surrender at the first place this time...so 3 of us got halau from class...again(for me la).
Congrats to daisuke....・・(;-ω-)

Here is the result up to this stage....

Here comes the Secretary...hahaha.

Three person was nominated: Apple, Yee Lin and Chee Meng. (・´з`・)

As usual, we halau them out (hahaha) after they gave their speech.
Actually what we did at outside? According to my experiences (2 times! =="), we just chat and stare at the basketball court. Like this.

HAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAH (enough).
Congratulations to Apple! ★(o゚∀`从'∀゚o)★

The next one was Vice Secretary. Requested by Kee Onn, he hope that the vice secretary should be a junior so that he /she can learn and to take over the jobs of a secretary by next semester.

Only two person was nominated for this post... I guess everyone is scared of the heavy(?) jobs of a secretary...The two brave people were Hui Jia and Hyun Woo. WOW.

While they were waiting outside...

Don't you think they look like couple? (Opps.. Hui Jia's gonna treat me with her Kung Fu when she read this. Better stay away from her now. o.o)

Back to the topic, our vice secretary for next semester is Hui Jia! Congrats! v(゚∀゚)v

Two more to go...

And now, who will be the next Dai Yi Loong(what they call them in English?) after Sandra?

This was a lil' bit special one... We need someone who has basic in Account. No matter SPM or O-levels or A-levels as long as u know Account then is fine.
However there was only a few of them who knows Account. (;´∀`)

Yeah, three of them. (Hui Jia and Yee Lin also know about Account if I am not mistaken.)

After the voting... Congrats to Yaw Jin! Our new Dai Yi Loong! Please try your best to chase people who owe the society's money! We're counting on you! XDDDD

By the way this is how the class looked like... (It's the first time for me to take photo from the back (∀`*ゞ) )

Last but not least, Publicity Director, which is what I've done in this semester.

Special requirements for this post also as you need to know about Adobe Photoshop, Movie makers, designing, updating the blog(which I enjoyed a lot), promoting the Society etc.
Arvin, Sharanya and Chee Meng was nominated. BTW it's all 1107! XD

Congratulations to Arvin! I'm sure that you can do better than me. (`・ω・´)

So this is the final result of our election yesterday:

Photo-shooting session:

Lastly, thanks for everyone who came yesterday and whoever read this blog! Sorry for making you guys read my bad English and scary grammar. (._.) No more weird Japanese session at the end of post anymore...because this may be my second last post...Bukit Tinggi post will follow up later. ・゚・(。>д<。)・゚・ (Well maybe I'll appear occasionally)
Thank you so much. ><
Arvin will take over here.

I'm sure that everyone in this society loves this society and we always want to make it grow stronger and bigger and be the best in MCKL!

-daisuke-

Japanese time:
季節(きせつ):kisetsu
Meaning: Season.
Example: 一年の中で一番暑い季節は夏です。(Ichi nen chuu no naka de ichiban atsui kisetsu wa natsu desu.) Summer is the hottest season in a year.

Extra: Kee Onn talked about songs related of astronomy... remind me of this. Well I don't think it's related to any of the astronomy knowledge except the name of the song. LOL

We Are Featured on Newspaper!

Stargazer Society on Sin Chew!
The MCKL Stargazer Society is featured in Sin Chew Paper last Sunday! On Page 21 of the Metro Section! (大都会)
That’s us on the right! The telescope is our beloved Astroview 100 ‘Steve’! From the left, that’s Moi Kok Ming, (Chrono) Fong Kee Onn, Victor Tan Yi Quan (face covered), Adrian Chong (he hogs the limelight every time!) and Nixon Kan! The caption reads “ MCKL Stargazer Society’s members using an astronomical telescope to gaze upon Jupiter”. Although they actually called us ‘astronomy club of MCKL’ =.=…. but we’re the astronomy club of MCKL right! Haha!
Here is a brief translation of the article:
Stargazers congregate to view Jupiter when it is closest to Earth
Tonight is the best chance to view Jupiter in Opposition. Opposition is when the Sun, Earth and Jupiter are in a straight line, and Jupiter is in its brightest, largest and nearest approach to Earth. This occurs once every 13 months in average.
To celebrate this occasion, the National Space Agency has organised a “Sidewalk Astronomy Night”, inviting astronomy enthusiasts and the public to gather at Titiwangsa Park to gaze upon Jupiter and the Moon.
The parties invited includes 7 astronomy groups, namely Starfield Instruments Supply, the Mufti Office of the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, the Space Science Laboratory, StarHunters Astronomical Society, StarFinders Astronomical Society, and MCKL Stargazer Society! The participants set up about 20 telescopes on the jetty to allow the public to gaze upon Jupiter.
“The aim of this program is to allow the public to have a chance to experience and know more about astronomy, “says Lau Chen Chen, Research Officer of the National Space Agency. “Telescopes are a considerable investment to have, therefore we provided these telescopes free of charge for those who are interested to try out any one of them to observe Jupiter and the Moon’.
She also added that the Agency has organised several similar activities last year, and successfully attracted about 1000 members of the public to view Jupiter and the Moon. She predicted that the numbers will be largely similar too for this year.
Apart from viewing Jupiter, the public can also participate in the lucky draw and a pop quiz organised by the Agency.

Sidewalk Astronomy Night @Titiwangsa 29102011

298917_10150346626773248_704593247_8219212_901513979_n

It's been a long time since our last outing... and yesterday(just now?) we just had our second sidewalk at Tasik Titiwangsa!
It's a huge event as this is organized by Planetarium Negara, so there were more clubs joining the sidewalk astronomy event today! The participants includes :

  • ANGKASA (National Space Agency)
  • Starhunter Astronomical Society feat. William Chin
  • Starfinder Astronomical Society feat. 14 inch bazooka
  • Starfield Instruments Supply
  • Choon Kiat from Perseids Telescopes Penang
  • Mr Shahrin Ahmad from FalakOnline
  • and MCKL Stargazer Society!

 374127_10150346626258248_704593247_8219206_608609660_n

We arrived at 7pm for preparation etc. Thanks to Nixon and Adrian for fetching members who got no transportation to there!
Sky was still bright at 7... but when Kee Onn started to set up the telescope it was already dark =P
You know...
He can set it up in the dark! wow~!
No need light! (if we on the light then will become the light pollution lol)
Our nice president also helped all of us to register~ so all of us got a nice goodies bag from the Planetarium Negara and also our dinner...www (stands for ‘haha’ in Japanese 2ch language)

IMGP4732

The event started at 8pm sharp! (SO PUNCTUAL AH MALAYSIAN)
There were Emcee who introduced to the public about the sidewalk, and also announcing who participated in this sidewalk.
The Emcee kept on asking people to register and for those who registered will get a number and can join the lucky draw session!
However, all of us did not get the any number for the lucky draw Orz except Joy! =)
If i not mistaken there were total 5 session of lucky draw!
Besides, there were quizzes for the public too! It's in Malay language... ^^
I think they can get a prize if they answered it correctly!

320742_10150346628693248_704593247_8219239_1066684327_n

As usual, VP Adrian takes all the spotlights! This beautiful board about light pollution is made by Apple Ying Yi, our talented handicraft member! Too bad our place was not strategic, there were no light sources to read the board (epic fail).

It's the first time in my life to see so many telescope at the same time actually haha.
The biggest one is 14inch! According to Mr president it costs the same price as a car!

312522_10150346631463248_704593247_8219252_697542429_n
Here are some of the many telescopes that were featured that night.

388979_10150346627688248_704593247_8219226_567720032_n

This red thingy looks funny. Its an Astroscan Plus, a no frills ideal beginner telescope (http://www.scientificsonline.com/astroscan-plus-telescope.html). The tripod stand must be homemade though. It looks like a Doodle heheh

IMGP4649

This long white telescope is of the Starhunters. Pic features from left, Chrono Fong, ???, William Chin and Simpson. Notice the blue box down there? It’s a treasure, the Sky and Telescope Seven Decade Collection DVD!

298867_10150346631728248_704593247_8219253_401628234_n

William’s scope.

A few Meade LX800’s I think from the National Planetarium. “Musytari” is Malay for Jupiter and Bulan for Moon. It has AutoStar features, no less you expect from the agency! With these scopes sidewalk should be done every Saturday!

303778_10150346626498248_704593247_8219209_1648227614_n

Some other scopes. This might be Starfield’s if not mistaken.

383863_10150346630658248_704593247_8219246_1731740479_n

Kok Ming skodeng from a random scope lol!

At first we tried to focus on the Moon! Last quarter?
Well the image in the telescope is upside down lah....
After that we changed our "stalking" target to Jupiter!
The largest planet in our solar system!
Using the telescope we can even see the 4 largest moon of the Jupiter which is Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto!

383792_10150346632583248_704593247_8219261_229370393_n

This is what Nixon managed at the eyepiece. Saw Jupiter and his moons?

Besides these two main attractions there was another one!
It's the Summer Triangle!
By joining the Altair, Vega and Deneb you can form a huge triangle in the sky =D
The dimmest one is Deneb but it's still bright enough for us to recognize the triangle!

Towards the end of the event Simpson introduced us some of the famous astronomy players in the Klang Valley!
I realized we're the youngest among the crowd  LOL
Well the weather was a but cloudy... so both the Moon and Jupiter was not always available...XD
Overall it was a very nice experience for amateur like me!
Thanks for everyone who came and made the outing so fantastic!

As usual, Japanese time! (actually u guys got remember or not!?)
天の川(あまのがわ):ama no gawa
Meaning: Milky way
Example: 晴れた夜には天の川が見えるよ。 You can see the milky way if the night sky is clear.
